Elevated bus debuts at Beijing International High-Tech Expo

A model of a Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) debuted at the 19th China Beijing International High-Tech Expo, which concluded on Sunday. The TEB is a purely homegrown invention of China, with its passenger compartment sitting above other vehicles on the road below, allowing cars to pass underneath. The TEB is designed to increase the utilization of road space.

"With a carrying capacity of 1, 200 people at a time, the TEB has the same functions as the subway while its cost of construction is less than one fifth of the subway. Its construction can be finished in one year, " said Bai Zhiming, the engineer in charge of the TEB project.

Trial operations of such a bus will start in Qinhuangdao City, north China's Hebei Province, in the second half of 2016.

No more traffic jams! New China "bus-way" is part subway part bus...

Part subway, part bus, a mass transporter known in Chinese as the "bus-way" went on show in Beijing earlier in May.

The vehicle, which is designed to run on track embedded in the roads, can transport up to 1200 people in cabins elevated above regular traffic.

Its main appeal over traditional forms of mass transport is its cost, says project manager Bai Zhiming.

"This vehicle has the features of a subway — the ability to transport people en mass — it can carry 1200 people in one journey. But the key is its low construction cost, it's less than a fifth of the construction cost of a subway, the construction time is also less than a fifth of the cost of a subway so it can be completed within a year, " Bai said.

Futuristic straddling bus allows cars running underneath

Tired of traffic jams and tail gas? The design of electric "straddling buses" lets cars drive underneath them, and can help reduce air pollution. Also known as land airbus, the new invention is less costly than subway systems.

Awesome! China's futuristic "straddling bus" launches 1st road test

China's Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) went through a road test in north China's Hebei Province on Tuesday. The passenger compartment rises far above other vehicles on the road, allowing cars to pass underneath.
The test-run tried to simulate real traffic conditions with one bus compartment traveling at a speed of 10 km per hour on a section of a 300-meter-long test track.

0:38 China Futuristic Transport Concept 2016 - Transit Elevated Bus (TEB)

China Futuristic Transport Concept 2016 - Transit Elevated Bus (TEB)

IT LOOKS like a cross between an oversized train and a transformer. But this is actually an elevated bus and China hopes it holds the answer to its crazy traffic jams.

The Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) would see passengers ride above the traffic below with stops placed along the route in a similar system to the subway — except apparently cheaper.

A scale model of the bus was unveiled just days ago at the 19th China Beijing International High-Tech Expo, and it certainly attracted some attention.

While the cost was not made clear, the engineer in charge of the TEB project said he believed it would solve major congestion issues across the country. Bai Zhiming told China’s Central Television network, CCTV News: “With a carrying capacity of 1200 people at a time, the TEB has the same functions as the subway while its cost of construction is less than one fifth of the subway.
“Its construction can be finished in one year.”

The bus is high enough to glide over the top of cars, allowing traffic to pass underneath while increasing road space.
An elevator would allow passengers to board from street level, similar to an above ground train system.

It is understood authorities are looking to trial the bus in Hebei’s Qinhuangdao city in the second half of this year.
